CITY OF SAN FERNANDO—To strengthen public and private awareness on the objectives of the Philippine Plan of Action to Control Tuberculosis (PhilPACT), the Center for Health Development III (CHD-3) through the National TB Program (NTP), facilitated the Second Regional TB Forum at Otel Apartelle on November 20.
The activity aimed to evaluate the action plan developed by the participants during the first TB forum conducted on July 2012 to scale-up and sustain coverage of the TB Directly Observed Treatment Short-course (DOTS).
“It is through the concerted efforts of both the public and private sector that the coverage of the TB DOTS implementation be increased,” Regional NTP coordinator Dr. Rhodora Cruz stated.
Present on the activity were the provincial health officers (PHOs), NTP coordinators and medical society representatives from the provinces of Central Luzon and representatives from the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PHIC) or PhilHealth and Philippine Information Agency III (PIA -3).
Through the said consultative workshop, the participants were able to discuss and agree on interventions regarding the gaps on aiming the NTP objectives.
Still one of the major concerns of the participants during the first and second forum, issues regarding PhilHealth claims and benefits were discussed on an open forum with Dr. Danilo Reynes and Dr. Evelyn Lopez of PhilHealth.
Reynes urged all PhilHealth accredited facilities such as RHUs and hospitals to be patient in claiming benefits to improve their facilities and services to TB patients.
According to Cruz, the CHD-3 is willing to facilitate trainings of informal health workers through its medical technologists to improve the quality of Direct Sputum Smear Microscopy, a procedure done to identify TB patients.
Other concerns discussed during the activity were effective service delivery, financing, governance, regulation, human resource and information system.
